Duchess Maria Antonia Walpurgis von Wittelsbach – Music Lover, Artist, and Intellectual
Abstract
The article presents the figure of Maria Antonia Walpurgis née Wittelsbach (1724–1780), a great lover of music, artist, composer, collector, poet, and also a great intellectual. Born at the court in Munich, she received a comprehensive education, including musical education. After marrying Frederick Christian, son of King Augustus III, she became a duchess at the Dresden court, where she not only conducted skillful politics but above all developed her artistic patronage, perfecting herself in music, literature, and painting. Throughout her life, she collected musical works, especially those of Italian composers. The extensive cultural and diplomatic activities that Maria Antonia conducted allow us to see her not only as an artist and patron, but also as a great intellectual.
