Predatory Conferences: Unethical Conference Practices Threatening Science

Tomasz Burdzik

Abstract

This paper describes the phenomenon of ‘predatory conferences’, with the focus on the problems they cause for science. Predatory conferences fail to properly manage peer review, frequently have fictitious organizing committee, do not operate on any quality control, are unclear about their finances and about conference organizer or location. They are not selective in terms of post-conference volume contributions. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects of predatory conferences.

Keywords

predatory conferences, ethics in science, scientific misconduct, good scientific practice.
