THE ANGLO-POLISH ALLIANCE OF 1939 IN THE LIGHT OF THE THEORY OF ALLIANCES
Abstract
The article examines the Anglo-Polish alliance of 1939 using the theory of alliances. The theory of alliances is a partial theory of international relations describing the behavior of state and non-state actors in allied relationships. It is based on assumptions of the realist school of international relations but it has a universal character and can be used by researchers of different schools. The article also provides the analysis of the alliance between Poland and the United Kingdom from the perspectives of history, political science and law. The article answers the following research questions: What factors determined the formation of an alliance by Poland and the United Kingdom in 1939?; What were the dynamics of the alliance during the Second World War?; What was the balance of this alliance for both sides and what determined its rupture? During the analysis it became clear that the alliance featured high effectivity what was the result of domination of the British and not the result of the ability of both sides to develop a strategy acceptable for the two states. Imbalance of potentials was severe for Poland because it did not have specific assets which could have mitigated imbalance of potentials in relation to its stronger ally. For these reasons, Poland was unable to prevent even British concessions to the USSR in the matters of Polish territorial integrity and independence. The author stresses how scientific approach to international relations can improve public debate regarding this and other alliances through explanation of many misunderstandings.
