The Potentiality of Translation of Eugene Vodolazkin’s Play "Sister of Four" into Polish (Historical and Cultural Aspects)
Abstract
The subject of this paper is the potential for translating Eugene Vodolazkin’s 2021 play “Sister of Four” into Polish. This work stands out within contemporary Russian literature because it combines philosophical reflections presented in an accessible manner with elements of comedy. Although Vodolazkin’s novels are widely read and frequently examined in scholarly research, only one of his works – “Laurus” – has so far been translated into Polish. “Sister of Four” contains numerous linguistic elements such as phraseologisms, catchphrases, phrasemes, intertexts, and quotations, all of which create significant translation challenges. The translation of cultural realities, even from East to West Slavic languages, almost always entails certain difficulties. Therefore, this article examines excerpts with deeper historical and cultural background and proposes possible strategies for rendering these fragments productively in Polish.
