Expressive Units as a Rhetoric Means in Public Speech

Dilyana Dencheva

Abstract

The aim of the study is to establish which language units in Bulgarian could be defined as expressive and what is their frequency and function in public speech. The source material for the study was excerpted mainly from national TV and radio programs during the years 2018–2021. The analysis reveals that the most frequent expressive units in the contemporary Bulgarian public language are phrases, metaphors and words of Turkish origin. Their function in public speech is mainly rhetoric, with several examples of poetic meanings resulting in occasional metaphors and creative innovations. The paper concludes with the discussion of the socio-cultural reasons behind the specifics of contemporary Bulgarian expressive units.
